New Yorkers Protest Trump Policies During May Day Demonstrations
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez made a surprise appearance at this year’s ‘May Day’ rally, where 1000s of labor leaders and activists gathered to oppose the policies of the Trump administration.
“Billionaire class should be afraid of the power of labor and everyday workers across the country,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cotez said.
Protesters came together to advocate for workers’ and immigrants’ rights, along with a wide range of other issues they say are negatively impacted by the federal government.
“We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the immigrant community, with our brothers and sisters in the labor movement, with all our communities and all workers throughout this country,” Lucia Gomez said.
Under heavy police presence, protesters marched from Foley Square to Battery Park. This year’s ‘May Day’ rally was organized by 50501, a group that aims to uphold the Constitution and end executive overreach.
“Sometimes I’m scared, absolutely, I’m a woman, and they’re really trying to take away women’s rights and make us second class citizens,” Green said.
Immigrants’ rights were at the forefront given the Trump administration’s latest deportation policies to countries like El Salvador.
“Rounding immigrants up and deporting them without due process. I think it’s disgusting. It’s not what should be going on,” Jacob Appet said.
“We have not had justice for all. Not for non-citizens, not for citizens, I mean, anybody could be next,” Ollowin Said.
